Getting started

Any S3 client works. Use path-style addressing and an access key from the console.

1

Create a bucket

Create one in the console, or let your client create it on first use.

console › New bucket › backups
2

Create an access key

Create a key pair in the console. Use read-write keys for backups and read-only keys for media players and mirrors.

3

Configure your client

Enter the endpoint and region in your tool. The same two values work for every client.

endpoint = https://s3.enderchest.store
region = eu-ams-1

Features

Enderchest implements the S3 operations that backup and sync tools use, and has a web console for browsing, uploading and sharing files. The documentation lists every supported operation.

S3 API

Buckets, objects, listings, multipart uploads, batch delete and copy. Signature Version 4 and Version 2, chunked uploads from the AWS CLI, presigned URLs and standard XML error responses.

AES-256-GCM · per-object key

Encrypted at rest

Each object is encrypted with its own key before it is stored, using AES-256-GCM in one-megabyte authenticated frames. Object keys are wrapped by a master key that stays on the gateway, and every frame is verified when it is read.

GET · Range: bytes=…

Range requests and streaming

Media players can seek, interrupted downloads can resume, and restoring one file does not require downloading the whole archive.

multipart · 12 parts
part 4 retried onceresumed from last finished part

Resumable uploads

Large files upload in parallel parts. An interrupted upload resumes from the last completed part, both in the web console and over the API. Objects can be up to 5 TB.

Share links and access keys

A share link gives access to one file, expires when you choose, and needs no account to open. Access keys are read-write or read-only and can be revoked one at a time.

Storing more

Pay by card after each month

To go past 50 GB, add a card in the console. After that there is no storage limit and the card is charged for what you stored.

Add a card

Usage is measured daily and charged pro rata: one terabyte stored for half a month costs half the monthly rate. The first 50 GB is not charged. After each month the amount is added to your balance, and the card is charged once the balance reaches $5; a smaller balance carries forward. Prices are in USD and exclude tax. We give 30 days notice before any price change.

Frequently asked questions

Is it S3 compatible?
Yes, for the operations that backup and sync tools use: list, put, get with ranges, head, delete, batch delete, copy and multipart upload, with Signature Version 4 and Version 2 authentication and presigned URLs. Versioning, bucket policies, lifecycle rules and website hosting are not supported. The documentation lists every operation.
Which clients are tested?
rclone, restic, Kopia, Duplicati, the AWS CLI and boto3 are each tested against the live service, including multipart uploads, renames, sync and presigned links. s3cmd and MinIO mc use the same operations, and the documentation has a working configuration for each.
How does pricing work?
Storage costs $3 per terabyte per month, and the first 50 GB is free. We measure what you store each day and charge the card you added after the month ends, so you pay only for the data you kept and the days you kept it. To store more than 50 GB, add a card in the console; after that there is no storage limit. There is no minimum and no commitment.
Do you charge for downloads?
No. Downloads and API requests are free. The service is intended for your own data, so it may not be used as a public file host; the acceptable use policy has the details.
How fast is it?
Uploads run in parallel parts and are usually limited by your own connection. Recently used data is served from a local cache. Other reads start within a second or two and then stream. The service is designed for backup and archive workloads, not for latency-sensitive serving.
Where is my data stored?
In Amsterdam, Netherlands. The gateway that encrypts and serves your data runs in Helsinki, Finland. Every object is encrypted with its own key before it is stored. The privacy policy describes what we log.
How do I close my account?
Email us. Delete your data first if you want it removed immediately; otherwise it is removed within 30 days of the account closing.
